St. Lawrence County high school seniors to get diplomas Friday and Saturday

Hundreds of high school seniors around St. Lawrence County will be bidding their schools farewell after they receive their diplomas this coming Friday and Saturday.

About 90 members of the Class of 2016 will walk to the stage in Appleton Arena Friday night to pick up their diplomas.

The ceremony begins at 7 p.m.

The school’s Academic Top Ten this year are Zach Barnes, Luke Frazer, Mary-Kait Mace, Samantha Curtis, Kiersten Larrabee, and Samantha Mace. Front, Brandon Calton, Anna Monroe, Sarah Rivers and Molly McMasters.

Graduation speakers will include class co-presidents Kiersten Larrabee and Samantha Curtis, and senior Zachary Kavanaugh.

The class officers will present to Superintendent Bill Gregory their gift to the school at the ceremony.

Students will perform a musical selection, “For Now” by Avenue Q.

Massena High School

On Saturday, June 25 at 1 p.m., Massena High School will be granting diplomas to about 210 seniors, 37 of whom have earned honors.

The gathering will be at Massena Arena this year and not at the high school, in order to more easily accommodate the large number of people expected at the ceremony.

Superintendent Pat Brady will address the students, families and friends.

Also speaking will be Class President Sean Casey, valedictorian Ethan J. Marcello, who will be introduced by Rebecca Violi, and salutatorian Abigail V. Matthews, who will be introduced by Randy Freiman.

Potsdam High School

Potsdam High School graduation is at 7 p.m. Friday, June 24 in Hosmer Hall at SUNY Potsdam.

About 75 members of the Class of 2016 are expected to pick up their diplomas.

Superintendent of Schools Joann Chambers will introduce graduation speakers, Class President Emma LoMastro, Valedictorian Kalie Grant, Salutatorian Valerie Clark, and April Rossiter, high school chemistry teacher, who will deliver the commencement address.

Interim Principal Mark Wilson will make the Presentation of the Class.

Ogdensburg Free Academy

Ogdensburg Free Academy’s commencement ceremony will take place at noon, June 25 in the Edgar A. Newell Golden Dome.

More than 90 students will be awarded their diplomas, including valedictorian Matthew Ramm and Salutatorian Yazhou “Jo” Zhou.

Ramm and Zhou will address their fellow students at the ceremony. Natalee Ryan will make student remarks and Danielle Guimond will preside over the senior class presentation.

Norwood-Norfolk High School

Norwood-Norfolk High School Class of 2016’s commencement ceremony will held at SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 25.

About 63 seniors will be getting their diplomas.

ELA teacher Rachel Cook will give the Address to the Graduates. Also speaking will be Leah valedictorian Livernois of Norwood and salutatorian Kylee Lashomb of Norfolk; Class President Peter Jatvis; Board President Jon Hazen; District Superintendent James Cruikshank; and High School Principal Robin Sutter.

Organist Laura Toland will perform, Kimberly McGuiness will sing the national anthem, and the Senior Chorus will sing.

Parishville-Hopkinton High School

Parishville-Hopkinton’s Class of 2016 will line up to receive their diplomas at the graduation ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 25 in the auditorium.

The senior class of about 25 students were led academically by Valedictorian Tanner Wilson and Salutatorian Rebecca Mitchell, who will also address students, along with Senior Class President Alison Parker and teacher Mary Keenan, who was selected by students to deliver the Commencement Address.

Madrid-Waddington High School

Approximately 52 diplomas to will be awarded to Madrid-Waddington seniors at 7 p.m. June 24 in the school auditorium.

Two students are graduating summa cum laude this year.

Elizabeth Froats has a 96.69 average. She is the daughter of Jason Froats and Katie Logan. She plans on attending SUNY Canton in the fall, majoring in nursing

And Cheryl Squires graduates with a 95.22 average. She is the daughter of Michael and Jane Squires. She plans on attending St. Lawrence University and will major in business and statistics.

Twelve other students are also graduating with honors with averages above 90 percent.

St. Lawrence Central High School

The graduation ceremony for St. Lawrence Central High School’s Class of 2016 is at 6 p.m. Friday, June 24 on the West Lawn of the campus, unless it rains, in which case it will be in the high school gymnasium.

Valedictorian Aaron Kesner and salutatorian Meghan Grow will address the class of 65 seniors.

One student will read a moving essay written for a scholarship application, which Guidance Counselor Julie Jenkinson said “everyone in the community will relate to.”

And Christine Compo-Martin, an English Language Arts teacher for 28 years, will be honored on her retirement.

Heuvelton High School

The 68th annual Heuvelton High School graduation ceremony will take place Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m. in the Poulton Auditorium, where about 47 students will receive their diplomas.

The program will open with a welcoming speech by Senior Class President Hannah Thornhill, followed by adresses from honor students Carter Pierce, Courtney Young, Brittany Fifield and Paige Weston.

Lisbon High School

Lisbon High School’s 2016 commencement ceremony will be in the high school auditorium at 6:30 p.m. June 24.

About 40 students are expected to receive their diplomas.

Class leaders include Kaitlyn Barney, daughter of Ray and Patti Barney, who earned the highest GPA in the Lisbon Class of 2016 with a 97.68. Kati will attend SUNY Oswego to pursue a degree in applied mathematics.

Rebekah Robinson, daughter of Dale and Shelley Robinson, is ranked second in the class with a 96.45 GPA. Rebekah will attend the University of Rochester this fall pursuing a major in biology.

Others in the honors group include Jennifer Snyder, Mercedee Bigelow, Kathryn Sovie, Bridgett Oshier, Fayeanne West, Maddison Vine, Sierra Dobbs, Adam Kelley, and Coleman Smith.

Colton-Pierrepont High School

Colton-Pierrepont’s graduating class of about 23 students will receive their diplomas at their commencement ceremony in the school auditorium Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m.

The class’s academic leaders this year are valedictorian Clare Jenkins and salutatorian Ethan Knight, both of whom will address students. Speaking to students at graduation will be guest speaker Caleb Campbell.

Hermon-DeKalb High School

The senior class at Hermon-DeKalb High School will be collecting their diplomas Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Between 30 and 34 students will be graduating this year.

Brooke Tarner is Class Valedictorian. Salutatorian is Kelsi Shippee.

Mary Jo Potter, library assistant, has been chosen by students to be the guest speaker at commencement. Senior Class President Shawn DeLorme will also address students.

Morristown High School

Morristown Central School’s commencement ceremony is set for 7 p.m. June 25 in the school auditorium.

Seventeen students are expected to receive their diplomas at the ceremony, including class leaders valedictorian Angelina Aslaynyan and salutatorian Ryan Vollmer.

Ed Easton, high school math teacher, will deliver the commencement address.

Gouverneur High School

Gouverneur Central School’s graduation ceremony will take place Friday, June 24, at 7 p.m. at the grandstands (weather permitting). In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will move to the auditorium.

The school will award diplomas to 119 students this year.

Class speakers include Sarah Geer, Noah Forsythe and Frederic Nentwick.

Gouverneur Central School does not recognize a class valedictorian and salutatorian. Instead they acknowledge an Honors Group. To become eligible for the Honors Group, students need to have a class rank average of 90 or above for 3.5 years of high school.

This year, Gouverneur Central has 23 members in the Class of 2016 Honors Group including Sarah Geer, Nicholle Gotham, Arden Ball, Mary Kate Wainwright, Brooke Shattuck, Ryan Shippee, Cassandra Foster, Cade Stevens, Belisena Hall, Noah Forsythe, Cody Hartle, Daniel Mullin, Kayla Gladle, Gabriella Dunkelberg, Frances Daly, Daniel Sweet, Maddison McIntosh, Thomas Bigelow, Katelyn Kennedy, Tyler Bowman, Frederic Nentwick, Brandon Streeter and Cailey Roberts.

Edwards-Knox High School

Edwards-Knox High School will graduate 51 students June 25 at 11 a.m. in the high school gym.

Four seniors will deliver speeches.

Nathan McCoy's speech is entitled A Final Farewell

Heather Finnerty will speak on Stepping Stones

Catherine Curley will talk about The Exhiliration of Change, presented as recorded audio because she is an AFS foreign exchange in Switzerland.

Noah White's speech is called A New Adventure.

Clifton-Fine High School

The Class of 2016 from Clifton-Fine High School receive their diplomas at a ceremony in the school's PA Miranda Auditorium beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25.

There are 20 seniors in the class.

Austin J. Milone is Valedictorian.

Jonah C Trembley is Salutatorian.

Hammond

Twelve students will walk the stage in Hammond June 26 at 2 p.m. to accept their diplomas.

Melissa Proven, valedictorian and Nicholas Jewett, salutatorian, will both give speeches at the ceremony. Proven is also the class president.

Special guest Marcia Thompson, a retiring social studies and history teacher will also speak at the ceremony.
