POTSDAM -- The St. Lawrence County Health Initiative is celebrating its 20th anniversary and plans to host an annual meeting and anniversary dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at SUNY Potsdam.

The theme of the event is “Celebrating the Past, Looking Toward the Future”, and will be a time to commemorate the past progress and future potential of the Health Initiative.

Birthed from a grassroots movement of concerned citizen and health care providers beginning in 1997, the Health Initiative was formed and hired one part-time employee, said a press release from the Initiative.

The organization was incorporated in 1999 and now employs 17 individuals working on wide variety of projects to better the health, wellness, and wellbeing of the community.

The mission of the Health Initiative is to measurably improve the health of St. Lawrence County residents, and the residents of the North County region, through collaborative community efforts, the press release said.

The Health Initiative is governed by member organizations including Claxton Hepburn Medical Center, Kinney Drugs, Massena Memorial Hospital, St. Lawrence County Government, St. Lawrence Health System, the State University of New York at Potsdam, and United Helpers Management Company.

“The vision of this organization has always been for these organizations, along with other community based partners, to work together as a team to reduce the burden of chronic disease in our community. It is their vision, and continued guidance that has brought the Health Initiative to where it is today,” said Anne Marie Snell, executive director of the Health Initiative.
