Several St. Lawrence County organizations are participating in the New York State Association of Reduction, Reuse and Recycling and the Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association's "Clothes the Loop" campaign.
The two groups are attempting to save some of the more than 1.4 billion pounds of recoverable textiles they say New Yorkers throw out each year.
They will take clothing, shoes, sneakers, belts, purses, towels, sheets, blankets and draperies. Even if the clothing is ripped, missing buttons, has a broken zipper or is slightly stained, it may be recycled. Only clothing that is wet (mildewed) or has been contaminated with a solvent such as gasoline, paint, or odorous cleaner cannot be recycled.
Collections centers in St. Lawrence County in Potsdam include the CORC Thrift Store and Kidz Kloset and More. In Canton, collection sites include Canton Neighborhood Center, A-Z Thrift Store, Church and Community Thrift Store and St. Vincent de Paul.
