St. Lawrence County gets $10,000 to fight rabies

St. Lawrence County legislators accepted a $10,000 grant to help combat a growing rabies problem in the North Country.

Legislators said the grant was awarded “to provide reimburse the county for additional low-cost rabies animal vaccination clinics to underserved areas of the county.”

The grant was issued from the New York State Department of Agriculture.

St. Lawrence County Department of Public Health reported that 23 percent of the animals tested for rabies last summer were infected with the disease.

In August, the county health department said 18 people were vaccinated between January and June of 2013.
