St. Lawrence County fraud investigators obtained a $9,848 welfare fraud settlement in December.

Department of Social Services and the District Attorney’s Office investigated numerous cases of reported fraud. These investigations focused on the crimes of welfare fraud, offering a false instrument for filing, unlawful use of a benefit card, forgery and other violations.

The programs affected by the reported fraud include SNAP (food stamps), temporary assistance, day care, Medicaid, and HEAP.

During this period, the county obtained judicial settlement of $9,848 and sanctioned suspects, preventing them from receiving further benefits from the programs they defrauded. The total amount of judicial settlements obtained by the county in 2015 was $400,828.

Investigations are ongoing and arrests are pending, according to DSS.
