Two farms in St. Lawrence County will be using a total of $319,030 for improved soil and water conservation practices, according to an announcement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office.
This is Round 20 in what is an annual program of grants to improve practices in local agriculture related to soil and water.
In St. Lawrence County, one farm will be using its grant to rebuild a manure pit that was originally made "in soils that were not the best" for such a project, according to St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District Manager Dawn Howard.
"There hasn't been any leakage," but they want to be sure there won't be, she said.
The second project will be to put a roof on a barnyard to manage rainwater, keeping clean water and dirty water separated.
