CANTON -- State Agricultural Commissioner Richard Ball has honored St. Lawrence County Farm Bureau President Jon Greenwood at the State Fair’s Dairy Day for his contributions to the dairy industry.

Greenwood was presented the PRO-DAIRY Agriservice Award by Ball and PRO-DAIRY Director Dr. Thomas Overton from Cornell University's Department of Animal Science.

Dr. Overton, in a release issued by Cornell University, said Greenwood has been high involved in the dairy industry at the local, regional and state levels. He has also been a strong supporter for applied research and Cooperative Extension programs.

The release also pointed to Greenwood’s leadership and support on issues ranging from the environment to cropping systems and business management. He has operated his dairy farm in the town of Canton since the late 1970s.

New York State Assembly's Agriculture Committee member and chair of the Task Force on Food, Farm and Nutrition Policy Addie J. Russell D-Threresa also travelled to Syracuse Monday for Dairy Day at the New York State Fair.

Assemblywoman Russell and her daughter, Cora, had a chance to check in on the cows and calves in the dairy barn and were also on hand when St. Lawrence County farmer Greenwood was recognized for his contributions to the dairy industry in the state.

"Dairy Day is really all fair long. You can check out the new baby calves in the birthing center, We did," she said.

"It was great to see our local producers win awards for their dairy products and to have the North Country's Jon Greenwood recognized with a PRO DAIRY Agriservice Award," Russell said.

Dairy Day is the State Fair's way of saying thank you to all the dairy farmers, dairy product processors and manufacturers who provide the state's official beverage, "Milk" and official snack “Yogurt.”

St. Lawrence and Jefferson join Wyoming and Cayuga as the top milk producing counties in the state.

Russell said she and her daughter took the opportunity to check out some rides and sample some of the products from the food vendors during their trip to the state fair.

"I stayed on the easy rides," she quipped, "and you would have to stay all week to try all the food."
