St. Lawrence County declares state of emergency, bans burning as firefighters work to contain Macomb wildfire

CANTON -- County officials have declared a state of emergency and banned all open burning for the next five days while firefighters work to extinguish a wildfire in Macomb.

The ban takes effect at 6 p.m. and will continue until Aug. 14.

“The state of emergency has been declared due to extremely dry conditions resulting in numerous out of control grass and brush fires throughout the county. Such conditions threaten the public safety of citizens of St. Lawrence County,” a release from St. Lawrence County Emergency Services says.

The fire in Macomb that prompted the declaration of a fire emergency in St. Lawrence County has been smoldering and flaring up for a month, according to witnesses and fire personnel.

The current focus for fighting the fire is to try to keep it from entering an area of dry pines.

“As of Tuesday, August 2016 at 6 p.m., no person shall intentionally set an open fire throughout St. Lawrence, with the exception of a campfire at a designated state, federal or department of environmental conservation licensed campground where the camp fire are in fire rings that (confine) the campfire,” the resolution says.

The order supersedes all burning permits and will extend through Sunday unless rescinded or extended.
