Snow may return to St. Lawrence County before the new year strikes, according to the National Weather Service.

Although they call for sunny skies today with temperatures around 20 degrees, they are calling for a chance of snow tonight in the southern reaches of the county.

On Wednesday, they say there is a 30 percent chance of snow in Potsdam and Canton, with Gouverneur looking at 50 percent and Star Lake 70 percent.

During the evening hours, Canton’s chances of frozen precipitation jump to 70 percent, 60 percent in Potsdam and 80 percent in Gouverneur. Massena is looking at 40 percent odds and Ogdensburg 50 percent. Temperatures are predicted around 15 degrees.

New Year’s Day bring a 50 percent chance of snow to Canton and Potsdam, 40 percent to Ogdensburg and 30 percent to Massena. Temperatures are forecast a few degrees below freezing.

Snow is expected to continue through Thursday night, with Gouverneur and Star Lake facing a 60 percent chance, Canton and Potsdam looking at 40 percent odds and 30 percent in Massena and Ogdensburg. Temperatures are predicted to fall to around 15 degrees.
