Hunters in St. Lawrence County harvested 129 bears during the 2015 hunting seasons, according to figures released Wednesday by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Hunters in St. Lawrence County took the fifth- and ninth-largest bears taken in the state last year.

More were taken in Fine, 17, than other towns in the county, but close were Hopkinton, 16; Colton, 14; and Clare, 12.

Other township totals were nine each in Russell, Pitcairn, and Edwards; eight in Parishville; seven in Piercefield; five each in Canton, Gouverneur and Hermon; four in Fowler and Pierrepont; two in Lawrence; and one each in Clifton, Morristown, and Potsdam.

Early season harvests accounted for most of the bears taken in St. Lawrence County at 55, and 47 were taken during the regular big-game season.

New York bear hunters took a total of 1,715 black bears during the 2015 hunting seasons, the second largest bear harvest on record in New York, state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos announced. Only the 2003 harvest (1,863) surpassed the 2015 year’s take.

In the Northern Zone, a total of 583 bears were harvested, 27 percent above the recent five-year average. Based primarily on cyclers of food availability, bear harvest in the Northern Zone tends to alternate between strong harvests during the early season one year followed by strong harvests during the regular season the next. This year, hunters were more successful during the regular season, taking 253 bears, whereas 183 bears were taken during the early season.

The fifth-biggest bear taken in the state in 2015 was 420-pound male during regular big-game season in Piercefield. The ninth-biggest was a 400-pound male taken with a muzzleloader in the Town of Canton.

The DEC estimates the average age of bears taken in the Northern Zone in 2015 to be about 4 years old for males and a little younger than 6 years old for females.
