CANTON -- St. Lawrence County legislators are still searching for a permanent chief public defender.
Attorney Steven Ballan will continue to serve as the county’s interim Public Defender until at least December.
Ballan was appointed to the post after Stephen Button left the job in January to become the county’s attorney.
Button replaced former County Attorney Michael Crowe who resigned after serving more than five years.
Ballan was supposed to leave the role Aug. 3, but the county has not found a permanent candidate to fill the chief public defender position.
“The ability to continue the interim appointment will provide an opportunity for the search committee to review available options and make a recommendation for a permanent appointment,” the resolution passed Monday says.
Ballan will receive a pro-rated salary of $79,510.
