A deed scam is once again circulating throughout the county, according to St. Lawrence County Clerk Mary Lou Rupp.
Rupp says several concerned residents have contacted her office about a letter they received in the mail. The letter comes in the form of an invoice labeled “Deed Processing Notice” and advises property owners to purchase a copy of their deed for $83.
Rupp says there is no need for residents to purchase a certified copy of their deed unless their original deed can’t be found, and even if they do need to get a copy, they can get one from her office for $5.
Anyone who responds to the solicitation will unnecessarily pay an extra $78, Rupp says.
“Please disregard the letter if you receive it and contact the County Clerk’s Office if you would like a copy of your deed,” said Rupp.
