St. Lawrence County Clerk encouraging organ, eye and tissue donation

Posted

The New York State Association of County Clerks (NYSACC) is partnering with the New York Alliance for Donation (NYAD) to promote organ, eye and tissue donation throughout New York State, according to Mary Lou Rupp, St. Lawrence County Clerk.

This program is responsible for saving and improving the lives of thousands of New Yorkers in dire need of transplants.

Of the potential organ donors in New York State, 18% enroll in the New York State Donate Life Registry, which is considerably below the 42% national average. Nearly 10,000 New Yorkers are on the national transplant waiting list and about 600 New Yorkers die each year due to the shortage of organ donors.

Since 98% of New Yorkers enroll in the Life Registry through the DMV, the St. Lawrence County Clerk has placed posters, brochures and enrollment forms in local DMV offices to remind people of the organ donor shortage and to provide them an opportunity to enroll in the Life Registry.

Interested people can also enroll by checking off the organ donor box on any license or non driver ID card application.
