CANTON – St. Lawrence County legislators have passed a resolution opposing a year-round catch-and release season on bass.
According to the resolution, passed at a special meeting Monday, the Department of Environmental Conservation requested input from sportsmen regarding an extended catch and release bass fishing season in St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties.
The resolution put forward by Legislator David Forsythe said the St. Lawrence County Fisheries Advisory Board opposes a catch and release season.
Bob Flavin, an avid angler and member of the St. Lawrence County Walleye Association, said his organization is also opposed to an extended bass seasons, because it could hurt the bass populations in St. Lawrence County waterways.
Flavin said studies have show that male bass often “guard” the eggs from other fish. He said in the time a bass is caught and released hundreds of eggs could be eaten or destroyed.
The board passed the resolution and forwarded copies to state legislators and DEC Commissioner Joe Martens.
