CANTON – The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators extended a contract with Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield to provide health insurance benefits to county employees.
The measure was approved Jan. 2 at the organizational meeting.
According to the resolution, the county saved $554,967 in third party administrator fess, consultant fees, medical claims, prescription claims in 2017, compared to 2016, after accruing a penalty of $225,000 from the previous administrator.
The service costs the county an estimated $48,599 per month.
The contract has been extended though Dec. 31, 2019.
St. Lawrence County has been working to keep health insurance costs at a sustainable level.
St. Lawrence County’s health insurance costs have risen significantly over the past few years. In 2012 the county spend $20.5 million compared to $23.8 million in 2016. The switch to a new third-party administrator was aimed at controlling the costs.
