CANTON -- St. Lawrence County legislators voted to allow the sale of sparklers and a few other small fireworks in St. Lawrence County for July 4 and New Year’s celebrations.
While most fireworks remain illegal in the county and throughout the state, the legislature passed a law Monday that would remove sparklers devices from the definition of the ‘fireworks and dangerous fireworks” that are restricted by the state.
Also allowed for sale in the county will be party poppers, wooden sparklers, cone fountains, cylindrical fountains and snappers.
Sales will be permitted from June 1 through July 5 and from December 26 to Jan. 2, each calendar year.
Those hoping to sell the devices will need to obtain New York State licenses and register with the State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.
Sales will be restricted to people who are 18 and older.
The law is to take effect immediately, meaning sale of the small fireworks would be possible this year.
