St. Lawrence County unemployment rate drops by nearly 1 percent from March to April
St. Lawrence County's unemployment rate dropped by nearly a whole percentage point from March to April, according to the monthly survey released by the state Department of Labor this afternoon.
In April, the DOL put the county's jobless rate at 10.1 percent, down from 11 percent in March, and better than the 10.3 percent posted in April 2011.Jefferson County, to our west, and Franklin County, to our east, also posted improved figures.
From March to April, Jefferson County's rate dropped from 11.1 percent to 10.1 percent, and Franklin County's rate dropped from 10.4 percent to 9.7 percent.
St. Lawrence County is no longer among the upstate counties with the highest unemployment rates. That distinction goes to neighboring Hamilton County to our south. Their rate for April was 11.7 percent, down from March, at 12.2 percent, but up from 10.5 percent in April 2011. Essex, Fulton, Montgomery, and Lewis counties all showed higher unemployment rates than St. Lawrence County in April.
