St. Lawence County's Tuesday voter turnout higher than last mid-term election

Voter turnout was up in Tuesday’s election compared to the last midterm election in 2014.

St. Lawrence County Board of Elections officials said 31,488 voted at machines out of an active registration of 59,065, over 53 percent turnout.

They gave out 2,737 absentee ballots and as of Wednesday afternoon, received back 2,272 but they have not yet been counted.

There are about 5,000 inactive registered voters not included in the 59,065. They may be among affidavit voters whose votes might be judged as valid, said Thomas Hardiman, St. Lawrence County Republican election commissioner.

“No numbers yet on the affidavits, as we are still pulling them all together, but then in the coming days the commissioners will rule upon which ones represent valid additional votes,” Hardiman said in an email.

In 2014, 26,056 people voted out of 57,380 registered voters, about 45 percent turnout. That includes absentee and affidavit ballots.
