Space heater malfunction caused Waddington fire that destroyed home, displaced two

WADDINGTON -- Investigators have determined that a Saturday morning fire that destroyed a home at 327 McGuiness Road was started when a space heater malfunctioned, according to former Waddington Fire Chief George Lefleur.

The resident, Angie Groux and who Lefleur described as "a friend" escaped through a bedroom window and were not injured.

Lefleur said firefighters were dispatched and on scene shortly after receiving a 4:15 a.m. report that the building was on fire.

By the time firefighters arrived, the house was ablaze and flames were coming through the roof, the ex-chief said.

Investigators have closed their probe and concluded a space heater malfunction in the front room sparked the conflagration, Lefleur said.

The Louisville Fire Department assisted.

Lefleur said there was a fire at the same spot about 12 years ago, which resulted in a death. The house was rebuilt, only to burn on Saturday.
