COLTON -- A South Colton woman was named citizen of the year at Colton Winterfest recently.

Mary Long, was selected for the honor for her community service in a variety of committees, clubs and organizations.

Long has been active in most town-based and many county-level events for many years. She is a dedicated member of the Colton Fire Department and Rescue Squad, serving as an officer and representing the department in many ways and at many functions. Also she is a driving force in the Racquette Valley Fish & Game Club, Amvets Post 262 and local ATV clubs, always working hard on fund raising and community service projects including roadside maintenance. As a member of the Winterfest Planning Committee she organizes the annual health fair every year to make a variety of services available to residents and others in the area.

Long’s generosity is particularly evident when working with area seniors, helping to make their lives easier and more enjoyable. Although the community benefits from her contributions all year long her efforts are particularly apparent at Christmas time. Her contributions as a senior citizen have been recognized by others also at both county and state levels.

Her love of family and influence on the lives of her family members, including her husband, children and grandchildren, underpins all she does for others in the community.

Town officials and residents said they are grateful that Long plays such a vital role in the community and thankful that she makes Colton her home.
