OGDENSBURG – The Society of the United Helpers recently held their 114th annual meeting, marking the end to another year and a host of changes within the organization. “It is an exciting time for United Helpers,” said Dr. Ravinder N. Agarwal, president of the Society Board of Directors. “Tonight we recognize the efforts of those who continue to serve the mission of the United Helpers, our volunteers, our staff- those who serve the community and to help those in need.”

Agarwal steps down as president and member of the Society Board of Directors for more than 14 years, passing the gavel to Dr. Edward I. Gordon. Agarwal joined the Society in 1998. He served as the vice president of the board of directors from 2004 to 2007 and as president from 2008 to 2012.

“We thank Dr. Agarwal for his leadership and commitment to the Society and those we serve,” said CEO Stephen E. Knight as he outlined strategies for the future and spoke of the year’s accomplishments. “With the efforts of the people in this room, we are able to accomplish a great deal. We must always remember, it is about people; the people we serve and the people we employ.”

The Society also recognized the efforts of long-time board members Gail Bongiovanni, Patricia Lewis and Christopher B. Acker. Acker joined the Society in 1961, serving vice board president in 1961 and 1962. In 1967, Acker was elected the first male president and was among the first men inducted into the Society. He served from 1967 through 1969 and was elected president again from 2001 to 2007.

Patricia Lewis joined the Society in 1989, working with United Helpers Canton Nursing Home (Maplewood Campus) unit membership from 1989 to 1996 and the United Helpers Independent Living (Partridge Knoll) membership from 1997 to 2012. He also served on the United Helpers Management Company Board of Directors from 2009 to 2012.

Gail Bongiovanni joined in 2003 and has served on the board of directors since March 2003 and as secretary and treasurer from 2008 to 2012. She was also a member of the Scholarship Committee.
