GOUVERNEUR– Social workers Julie Lawless and Theresa Samways have joined the staff at St. Lawrence Health System’s Gouverneur Hospital.
They will provide care in the new Outpatient Substance Use Disorder Service at the Hospital, 77 West Barney Street, Gouverneur.
Lawless is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and earned her Master’s in Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Albany, NY. She has extensive knowledge from working with individuals in the psychiatric center setting, probation department, and nursing home environments. She has served on interdisciplinary treatment teams, worked as a group facilitator with families, conducted interviews and risk assessments, and managed behavioral health-related disabilities.
“My ambition is to make a positive difference in individuals’ lives by creating a warm, empathetic, beneficial, and supportive rapport with them so they may achieve their ultimate aspirations,” Lawless stated.

Samways is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and earned her Master’s in Social Work (MSW) degree from Saint Louis University School of Social Work, St. Louis, MO. She has worked with young students, college students, and adults in a variety of settings. Her previous experience includes providing clinical assessments for those dealing with behavioral and systemic issues, academic issues, and people with depression, anxiety, gender and sexual identity, and family and/or relationship issues.
“My approach is tailored to fit the needs of the client, so clients can feel comfortable and understood, which frees them to focus on solving their problems and improving their well-being,” Samways said.
LCSWs work with clients to find out what strong natural skills and talents they possess that can be used as a launching point to tackle issues causing hardship in the individual’s life. The social work framework for mental health therapy is very holistic, as it will take into account not only the individual client’s emotional and psychological makeup, but also societal and environmental factors that can impact the well-being of the client.
