CANTON -- The Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton has been actively involved in the wider community promoting social justice for nearly two centuries. The church is looking to hire a part-time social justice coordinator to take its work to the next level, said a press release from the church.

Applicants can email a letter of interest, resume, and list of three references to the Rev. James Galasinski, minister@uucantonny.org.

Applications will be considered immediately with an offer of employment expected by mid-March.

The position will be 10 hours a week, with flexible hours, at $16 an hour, and paid time off.

The Social Justice Coordinator will work closely with the minister and volunteers leaders to further the UU Church’s vision for social justice in the congregation and the wider community by increasing the church’s visibility and promoting participation in justice programing.

This includes managing existing social justice efforts, developing and implementing new projects, partnering with outside organizations, promoting opportunities to connect, and supporting the work of congregational social justice groups, so congregants have meaningful volunteer experiences.

The coordinator will report to the minister.

Duties and responsibilities of the social justice coordinator will include:

Fostering congregational participation and volunteerism in justice activities; collaboration with the Minister and volunteer leaders to organize events and initiatives to promote our vision for a just and peaceful world; maintaining visibility of justice programming through internal and external publicity; recruiting new volunteers; implementing effective social justice actions; supporting the Social Action Committee and other justice groups of the congregation; building strong relationships with local partnerships (including but not limited to Planned Parenthood, 4 area Universities, 350.org, Grace House, Amigos in Salud, Poor People’s Campaign, Garden Share, Church and Community Program); working with volunteer leadership in the congregation to develop action strategies; serving as a point of contact for justice-related requests from congregation and wider community; developing and tracking goals and activities; and attending periodic staff and supervisory meetings.

The successful applicant will be highly organized, have trong written and oral communication skills, be competent using digital technology; comfortable working across cultures, coalitions, generations, and diverse religious and spiritual communities; committed to anti-racism and anti-oppression; and agree with the mission of the UU Church of Canton.

Having a background in community organizing, program management, or volunteer management, and ability to work with youth and children will be helpful.

The coordinator must be available at least one Sunday morning per month and some evenings with possibility of some work from home, said the press release.
