A lake-effect snow warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. for southern St. Lawrence County, where as much as a foot of snow, and maybe even more, could accumulate by Friday.

The National Weather Service is especially cautioning residents and travelers south and east of US Rt. 11 in Gouverneur-Star Lake area, with a forecast of heavy snowfall and blowing snow. Snowfall rates there could reach two inches an hour this evening.

The conditions prompted St. Lawrence County Emergency Services to warn motorists of the hazards and to advise no non-emergency travel again today in the south of the county.

Six to eight inches of snow had already fallen from the lake effect snow band in the Fowler and Gouverneur area this morning as the band was shifting slowly east across southeast St. Lawrence County.

The NWS forecast for the Gouverneur area, revised at 1 p.m., said total daytime accumulations there could amount to six to 10 inches, with more snow overnight.

In the Star Lake area, there has been less snowfall today – amounting to four to eight inches by the end of the day, the NWS says –but another three to seven inches could add to that tonight.

As a result, hazardous travel is expected with snow-covered roads, blowing snow, and significantly reduced visibilities in winds from the southwest at 5 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Visibilities could vary greatly in the area, and could drop to zero without notice, the NWS said.
