The key phrase in the forecast for northern New York over the next few days is "a chance of showers."

The National Weather Service points to a stagnant upper low pressure system sitting over the Great Lakes region that will keep unseasonably warm temperatures and somewhat humid conditions circulating across the North Country through the weekend and into the middle of next week.

Any rain showers will be spotty tonight and through the weekend. Skies will remain partly to mostly cloudy through the weekend, with some development of fog at night. High temperatures will be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees Saturday, Sunday and Monday, with overnight lows in the 60s, before things begin to cool a little starting on Tuesday.

While clouds and a chance of some rain persists through the period, the forecasters only put the chance of showers at between 20 and 50 percent through next Thursday.

Sunday: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 76. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. Light east wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
