Showers, thunderstorms predicted to give way to sunny and clear skies for long July 4 weekend in North Country

The National Weather Service predicts St. Lawrence County has a good chance of seeing showers and thunderstorms this evening and tonight. But those going out to celebrate July 4 need not worry, the NWS is calling for clear skies and temperatures in the 70s for most of the county Friday through Sunday.

Massena, Potsdam and Star Lake have a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms before 4 p.m. today, according to the NWS. Canton may see storms by 5 p.m., they said.

The NWS is calling for Gouverneur, Potsdam, Canton and Star Lake to see showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 10 p.m., with scattered showers and possibly more thunderstorms until 2 a.m.

Communities along the St. Lawrence River have a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m., meteorologists say.

The county should see clear skies starting Friday. Forecasters say there is a 20 percent chance of rain before 9 a.m. in Canton, before 10 a.m. in Potsdam and before noon in Star Lake.

This should give way to temperatures in the mid and high 70s on Friday throughout the county.

This afternoon - Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 4pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Cloudy, with a high near 77. Northwest wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight - Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 10pm, then scattered showers and thunderstorms between 10pm and 2am, then a chance of showers after 2am. Cloudy, with a low around 57. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Independence Day - A 20 percent chance of showers before 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 74. West wind 7 to 10 mph.

Friday night - Mostly clear, with a low around 51. West wind 3 to 5 mph.

Saturday - Sunny, with a high near 77. West wind 5 to 10 mph.

Saturday night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 56. Southwest wind around 7 mph.

Sunday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. Southwest wind 9 to 11 mph.

Sunday night - Mostly cloudy, with a low around 63. Southwest wind 7 to 9 mph.

Monday - A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph.

Monday night - A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. Southwest wind around 9 mph.

Tuesday - A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. West wind around 8 mph.
