CANTON -- Several short films that tell the stories of TAUNY Heritage Award recipients will be shown at TAUNY, 53 Main St., Thursday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m.
The films were created this spring by St. Lawrence University students through a partnership between TAUNY and a SLU Digital Storytelling class taught by Viebranz Visiting Professor of Creative Writing Lillian-Yvonne Bertram.
Each of the films includes interviews with a TAUNY Heritage Award recipient and illustrates their experiences in their tradition. Featured Heritage Awardees include: Bear Fox and the Akwesasne Women Singers (2014), rug braider Helen Condon (2004), fiddler and teacher Gretchen Koehler (2014), blacksmith John Scarlett (2015), Adirondack packbasket maker and singer-storyteller Bill Smith (1995) and Dulli Tengeler of Birdsfoot Farm (2010).
The screening will be followed by a reception and chance to talk with Heritage Award recipients and student filmmakers.
"The students from the St. Lawrence University Digital Storytelling class are proud to be putting their skills to use in the community," Bertram said. "Through this collaboration they've learned a tremendous amount about the invaluable traditions and people that make up the fabric of North Country character."
The event is free and open to the public. More info is available at tauny.org, or 386-4289.
