The New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute is conducting an Honorary Membership Drive for new members, according to St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells.

The Sheriffs’ Association Institute was formed in 1979 to make a difference by combining efforts with sheriffs across the state. The institute contributes to county law enforcement by communicating critical updates, providing professional training and education, and helping bring about improvements at sheriff’s offices across the state.

To become even more effective, the Sheriffs’ Institute has always relied on the long-standing support of Honorary Members.

That effort is being done through a direct mail campaign. The sheriffs strongly believe that law enforcement organizations should not use telemarketing to raise money. They believe that a letter sent to potential members is an opportunity to explain why they are raising money. This way if the letter's reader is interested in supporting the sheriffs’ programs - in particular the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp - that decision can be made without any pressure. There is no follow-up to these letters of invitation.

The summer camp, the sheriffs flagship program, is in its 40th year. It provides 840 economically challenged children each year an opportunity to spend some time on Keuka Lake, all paid by the institute, including transportation.

The program combines summer recreation with activities designed to teach understanding of and respect for our laws and the men and women who enforce them, Sheriff Wells said.

“In these difficult economic times we cannot forget our youth who will not have the opportunity for a summer camp experience or a summer vacation,” Wels said.

“By becoming an honorary member you are supporting the Sheriff’s Sumer Camp for economically disadvantaged children,” he said.

The institute is registered with the state attorney general’s Charities Bureau. All donations are tax deductible.
