Bill Sheridan of Hammond increased his lead over Cape Vincent businessman John Byrne to 20 votes in the 116th Assembly District Republican primary with absentee ballots counted in St. Lawrence County Monday.

As of Monday morning, Sheridan’s vote total was 1,741 and Byrnes’ count was 1,721, including votes from Primary Day Sept. 13, putting him in the lead to be the GOP candidate on the ballot to challenge incumbent Democrat Adie Russell in November.

But that total does not include absentee ballots from Jefferson County, Byrnes’ home county, which will be counted this afternoon.

Sheridan, who has served in the past as county legislator, chairman of the St. Lawrence County Republican Party, Hammond judge and Canton village trustee, received 1,650 votes – 957 from St. Lawrence County and 693 from Jefferson County – in voting on the 13th.

John Byrne, the former Town of Cape Vincent board member who lost narrowly to Democrat Addie Russell two years ago, received 1,643 votes – 695 from St. Lawrence and 948 from Jefferson County – last Tuesday.

That amounted to a seven-vote lead for Sheridan on Primary Day.

In absentee, military and affidavit ballots counted Monday morning in St. Lawrence County, Sheridan added 91 votes for a current total of 1,741.

Byrnes added 78 votes in the count this morning for a curent total of 1,721.

Jefferson County Board of Elections has yet to weigh in with their count of absente ballots, which county Republican Elections Commissioner Jude Seymour said would be conducted this afternoon.

Russ Finley of Lisbon, who ran two years ago with the backing of the Conservative Party, received 683 votes – 393 from St. Lawrence County and 290 from Jefferson County during Primary Day voting. His absentee vote tally was not immediately available.

The “River District” now represented by Russell, who lives in Theresa, includes all St. Lawrence County communities along the St. Lawrence River plus Canton and Potsdam.

Byrne lost narrowly to Russell two years ago when he held the lead until absentee ballots were counted. He already holds the Conservative, Independence and Reform nomination.
