Although the severe weather from Hurricaine Sandy appears to be remaining south of St. Lawrence County, a high wind advisory remains in effect until Tuesday morning as gusts of up to 70 mph are still likely.

Anticipation of the storm caused may closures throughout the North Country as residents prepared to button down for power outages and mild flooding.

States of emergency were declared in Massena, Ogdensburg, Canton and Lisbon and several public offices, schools and universities canceled afternoon and evening events.

Although most of the storm will likely miss St. Lawrence County, Hurricane Sandy is expected to make its way inland overnight moving, northwest and losing strength, according to the National Weather Service.

Sandy is expected to remain south of St. Lawrence County before working its way northeast Thursday, when it will likely be downgraded as a "tropical depression" bringing with it winds and rain.
