Severe thunderstorms could hit St. Lawrence County this afternoon and evening

St. Lawrence County could see scattered severe thunderstorms as early as this afternoon, the National Weather Service predicts.

The NWS has the region under a hazardous weather outlook, calling for the possibility of damaging winds and heavy rains.

They forecast a 40-percent chance of storms in Massena and Gouverneur. Temperatures will be in the low-90s, the NWS says, and a few degrees cooler in the mountains.

Meteorologists say Potsdam and Canton have a 40-percent of thunderstorms tonight, with a 50-percent chance in Ogdensburg.

Those areas forecast for thunderstorms should get hit by 10 p.m. at the latest, with a chance of continued showers and thunderstorms until 2 a.m.

On Wednesday, Potsdam has a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Massena, Star Lake have a 20-percent chance after noon, with the same odds after 1 p.m. in Canton and Ogdensburg.

The detailed forecast for Potsdam is:

This afternoon: Scattered thunderstorms. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rain. Partly sunny and hot, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 95. Southwest wind around 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: Scattered thunderstorms before 10pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 10pm and 2am. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Southwest wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 85. Southwest wind 9 to 16 mph.

Wednesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 62. Southwest wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light after midnight.

Thursday: A 30 percent chance of showers after 9am. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph.

Thursday night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53. West wind 3 to 6 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Independence Day: A 30 percent chance of showers before 9am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. West wind 3 to 7 mph.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 78. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the afternoon.
