More than 2,400 National Grid customers in St. Lawrence County were without power early this evening after a thunderstorm with high winds passed through the area.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service extended a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for St. Lawrence County and upstate New York until 10 p.m.

Communities with the largest number of reported power outages include Colton, Hammond, Clifton, Macomb, Morristown and Rossie, as well as 216 in Canton, according to National Grid. In some cases, power is expected to be restored shortly, but in other instances the power company says it may be several hours before electricty returns.

Late this afternoon, the National Weather Service had issued the warning through 6:15 for St. Lawrence County since Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms capable of producing one inch-diameter hail and destructive winds in excess of 70 miles per hour was on its way.

Now that front has passed through county, the weather service is keeping the Sever Thunderstorm Watch in effect, but without predictions of hail and 70 mph winds.

Residents are asked to report damaging winds or hail to the National Weather Service by calling 1-800-863-4279 or by submitting a storm report at weather.Gov/Burlington.

If the storm strikes, residents should get to safety immediately, NWS officials say. Winds may knock down trees and power lines and damage buildings. Large hail may cause injury and damage property.
