CANTON – Canton firefighters were called out this morning to a brush fire about three miles from the center of Canton.

Canton went out at 10:20 a.m., followed by the Morley, Pyrites, Rensselaer Falls, and DeKalb Junction volunteer fire companies, all responding to a fire set to dispose of leaves by owner Fred LeFlair at 443 Jingleville Rd., not far off of Miner Street, according to Canton Fire Chief Bob Crowe.

Two structures on the property were threatened but did not become involved, Crowe said.

The fire was contained in an area of woods and brush of about three to four acres, Crowe said.

The wind this morning made it a tricky fire to fight.

“It was burning pretty good just as the wind picked up,” Crowe said. “It was a little difficult to track down” as the fire made its own paths through the brush.

The National Weather Service issued a warning of breezy conditions and low humidity today in the North County, cautioning against any open burning, which could make for a potentially dangerous situation.

Crowe said the owner had been burning leaves when it got out of control.

Aside from the March-to-May ban on open burning every year, and with no specific exemption in DEC Regulations Part 215 for residential leaf and grass burning at any time of year, Chief Crowe says he believes such fires are illegal.

No one was reported hurt fighting the fire.
