POTSDAM -- SOAR, the senior learning program in Potsdam, recently presented the Outstanding Contribution to SOAR Award to Leon LeBeau, and other awards to Ed Russell and Juanita Babcock.

The Outstanding Contribution award is presented to an individual who has provided exemplary service to SOAR and its mission. The award is not given every year but is reserved for people who have made extra special contributions to SOAR.

LeBeau is a founding member of SOAR, and has been an active member of the organization for retired people since its inception in 2001.

LeBeau is a renowned local artist whose talent for mentoring budding artists has resulted in some of his earliest SOAR students continuing to expand their creative talents and establishing a new legion of artists who call themselves "Leon’s Groupies," according to the award announcement.

The 2016 Super SOARer Award, given to a SOAR member who has contributed significantly to the organization, was presented to Ed Russell. He has served on the board of directors, including as chair from 2010-2012 when membership grew by 40 percent, as curriculum co-chair for 15 semesters, and as a member of the group’s administrative and finance committee. Russell has contributed consistently to SOAR as a steady, stabilizing rudder helping to guide the organization through a period of rapid growth, the announcement said.

SOAR’s fall semester awardee is Juanita Babcock, who was presented with the Leon LeBeau SOARing Educator Award. The award honors a teacher who, like LeBeau, has made a major contribution to the education, experience and well-being of SOAR members. Juanita has taught exercise classes, including belly dancing, culinary classes, and has taken members “around the world” through sharing her many “Road Scholar” travels at SOAR "Vicarious Voyagers" sessions.

Juanita is known to the SOAR membership as a teacher filled with infectious enthusiasm that allows her students to enter her world and share her adventures., the announcement said.
