Sen. Patty Ritchie called on Education Commissioner John King Wednesday to host a Common Core community meeting in the North Country.
She also asked members of the standing Education Committee to consider testimonials from parents and teachers when reviewing the newly implemented Common Core standards, which have received wide criticism throughout the stat.
“Hundreds of concerned parents and educators have reached out to me regarding the state’s new Common Core standards and today’s hearing was another opportunity to hear firsthand from those who are personally affected by new education reforms,” said Sen. Ritchie.
The hearing—which was hosted by Senate Education Committee Chairman John Flanagan— was held in an effort to review the impact and effectiveness of recent state education reforms.
“I’m hopeful that the state education leaders who were in attendance will take their testimony into account as we move forward with reviewing the effectiveness of these recent changes.”
At the hearing, Sen. Ritchie also repeated her call for Education Commissioner John King to host a Common Core community meeting in the Northern and Central New York region.
Currently, there are no planned stops in the region Sen. Ritchie represents.
Last month, Sen. Ritchie called on the Commissioner to host a meeting in her district.
