State Sen. Joe Griffo, who represents Massena and Potsdam, says the recent appointment of Florida school superintendent Mary Ellen Elia to the state Board of Regents may have been rushed.
“The fact that all of the Regents were alerted over the Memorial Day weekend to be in Albany for a special personnel meeting, instead of waiting for a regular session, creates the impression that they are suddenly trying to settle on a new commissioner,” Griffo said.
“I am encouraged by MaryEllen Elia’s background in education, including her years as a high school social studies teacher in upstate New York, as well as her time as a school superintendent in Florida. She appears to be familiar with the diverse socioeconomic issues that impact many school districts, and her tenure as superintendent saw improved graduation rates and performance among impoverished youths,” according to Griffo.
“I wish Commissioner Elia well in her new leadership role, and we’re hopeful that she will be given the necessary time to fully prepare herself before any important decisions are made that will impact the education of our children and their teachers.”
