Two programs to help people manage diabetes begin in January in the Massena and Canton-Potsdam areas.
The Health Initiative is offering two programs related to Type II Diabetes – the Diabetes Prevention Program and the Diabetes Self Management Program -- to help encourage lifestyle change and better day-to-day self management of the condition.
The Diabetes Prevention Program is a yearlong lifestyle change program designed for those diagnosed as pre-diabetic, or at high risk for acquiring Type II Diabetes. Through 16 weekly sessions, followed by 6 monthly meetings, leaders help participants learn techniques to help reduce the chance that their pre-diabetes will lead to a diagnosis of Type II Diabetes. Groups of 10 to 12 participants help support and encourage each other, and have fun doing it, according to the announcement from the Health Initiative.
The Diabetes Self Management Program is a six-week program for groups of participants who are living with diabetes. Topics covered include nutrition, physical activity, problem solving, short term goal setting, medication usage, and dealing with the difficult emotions that come with living with a long term health condition. Support and encouragement from both leaders and peers help with day-to-day management.
Both programs will be offered in the Massena and Potsdam/Canton areas beginning in mid-January. To learn more and to enroll, contact Linda Caamaño at linda@gethealthyslc.org or at 261-4760 x230.
