OGDENSBURG -- The city’s parks and recreation department is partnering with the Seaway Valley Prevention Council to host a cigarette butt clean-up day at Kids Kingdom on Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m.-noon.
The department will install a “No Smoking” sign at the playground and students from Ogdensburg Free Academy will pick up cigarette butts in and around the playground. Small flags will be placed where the students find the cigarette butts to give the public a visual reference as how many people smoke in and around the city playground.
Light refreshments and snacks will be provided.
The Seaway Valley Prevention Council initiative is part of an Advancing Tobacco Free Communities grant in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. Program officials say they aim "to reduce the impact of tobacco by reducing the impact retail tobacco marketing on youth, establish a tobacco-free community norm through tobacco free outdoor air polices and tobacco free housing policies and reduce tobacco imagery in youth-related movies and tobacco industry presence on social media."
