Cargo tonnage traversing the St. Lawrence Seaway is down 12.5 percent from a year ago.
According to figures released today by the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, the decline is more significant in the Montreal-to-Lake Ontario section, which includes Eisenhower and Snell Locks near Massena, than in the Welland Canal section, which carries ships between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
Overall cargo through the Montreal-Lake Ontario section is off by 2,453 metric tons through July a year ago, a decline of 17.85 percent. The Welland Canal section is down by only 621 tons, or 4.58 percent.
Vessel transits in the downstream section are also down, from 1,300 through July last year to 1,148 so far this year.
Iron ore remains the largest cargo category, and that is down by about 30 percent in the river section but only down by less than four percent through the Welland canal.
