Scouts in St. Lawrence County increasing, but volunteer numbers not keeping pace

POTSDAM -- While the number of boys interested and participating in scouting has increased over the past several years, the number of volunteers at the district level has not.

“We need volunteers who are enthusiastic about youth development through the program that Boy Scouts of America offers to youth in Troops, Crews and Packs,” said District Executive Haley M. Ashdown.

Vacancies currently on the Northern Lights District Executive Committee currently include activity chair and committee members, membership chair and program chair. Several scouting commissioners are also needed.

Ashdown explained that the activities chair and committee members help “manage and develop activities for our youth,” while the Membership Chair “aids in recruiting events, promotion and organization of youth.”

The district’s program chair aids in the running of training, camping and activity committees, while Commissioners are district and council leaders whose goal is to help local scouts succeed.

“They coach and consult with adult leaders of Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops and Venturing crews,” Ashdown said. “Commissioners help maintain the standards set forth by the Boy Scouts of America.”

These volunteer positions are available to both men and women 18 years of age or older, and would be ideal for former scouts looking to get involved in their community. Scouting experience though is not required.

For further information, contact Ashdown at Haley.Ashdown@scouting.org or Scott Quinell at bsaquinell@gmail.com.

The district’s committee meets at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, with no meetings held in July and August.
