RUSSELL -- The effort to keep the historic Russell Town Hall and Theater in good shape has received a grant of $8,500 for an architect to see what steps should be taken.
The Preservation League of New York State has made the grant for a “historic structure report” for the 1921 brick Classical Revival municipal building.
The building, which still houses town government, the court, the post office and an ornate theater, was designed by Samuel D. P. Williams, a prominent Ogdensburg architect. The site and funding were provided by Mr. and Mrs. Seymour H. Knox and Seymour H. Knox Jr., the family closely associated with Buffalo arts, culture and equestrian activities.
The historic structure report will be undertaken by architects Holmes King Kallquist & Associates, and will guide the town’s effort to address masonry repair, accessibility, plaster and stenciling restoration, and other issues facing this State and National Register-listed landmark.
“Use of the Town Hall and Theater has been increasing, and this historic structure is important to our community,” Town Supervisor Robert Best said.
“A historic structure report will help us maintain our Town Hall for future generations, and we are very grateful for the assistance this grant award gives us to look towards and plan for the future,” Best said.
At its August 2014 meeting, the Preserve New York grant program panel selected 15 applicants in 12 counties around the state to share $100,000 in funding, according to the league’s Regional Director of Technical and Grant Programs Tania Werbizky.
“As always, the competition for these funds was intense,” Werbizky said. “The Preservation League is delighted to help advance the preservation efforts of the Town of Russell with timely funding from Preserve New York.”
“Preserve New York has a strong track record of bolstering local preservation efforts and delivering a strong return on investment,” said Preservation League President Jay DiLorenzo.
