Rotary Clubs again sponsoring Dodge Pond camps for children with disabilities

The St. Lawrence and Jefferson County Rotary Clubs will sponsor children’s camps at St. Lawrence NYSARC’s Dodge Pond this summer. The St. Lawrence County Rotary Camp will be August 9-14.

St. Lawrence County has held their camp for more than 10 years. The funds donated by the organizations give 100 children with intellectual or other developmental disabilities the opportunity to attend camp.

Located in the foothills of the Adirondacks, Dodge Pond offers people with disabilities a chance to camp in an environment that is safe and relaxing. Dodge Pond has every amenity expected at a traditional camp, but has made accommodations so that it is fully accessible for wheelchairs.

Over the past several years, donations of supplies, time, and expertise from the Rotary Clubs have led to the building of lean-tos and a full-size basketball court. They have also built a battery-operated accessible raft that allows people in wheelchairs to ride and fish on Dodge Pond.

The most recent contribution from the Rotary Clubs has culminated in the creation of a remote campsite. Now, campers can boat out with staff members to a unique area equipped with two new lean-tos and an environmentally friendly, compostable privy. This new location will offer campers a rustic yet secure experience that is not available at any other local camp for people with disabilities.
