Roster announced of Montreal Canadiens greats to play at Feb. 14 game in Massena

MASSENA – Stéphane Richer, Guy Carbonneau and Chris Nilan are among the Montreal Canadiens alumni coming to Massena Feb. 14 for a game with local players as part of the Lake St. Lawrence Winter Chill Festival and the Canadiens Alumni Tour.

The list also includes veterans Patrice Brisebois, Francis Bouillon, Gilbert Delorme, Mathieu Dandenault, Jocelyn Lemieux, Normand Dupont, and goaltender Richard Sévigny.

Two teams from Massena and one from Potsdam will challenge the alumni, one team for each of the three periods.

Also joining Les Habitants on the ice will be Owen Herne of Buffalo, who has paid the $1,000 asked by organizers for one of two slots reserved for amateurs who want to play with the Montreal legends. One slot remains unfilled as of last notice.

And Mike Wickwire has spent the $750 required to sit on the bench with the Habs as an honorary assistant coach.

“I know Mike’s excited to be on the bench, and Owen Herne is super-excited,” said game organizer Mike Gagner.

The roster appears to be set, but they’re not sure yet who will be the Canadiens coach for the game.

Speculation centers on high-scoring Canadien Guy Lafleur, who played first with Montreal, helping them to five Stanley Cups before he retired, then came out of retirement to play a few more NHL seasons, first with the New York Rangers and then with the Quebec Nordiques.

“We’ll have confirmation on the coach early- to mid-next week,” Gagner said.

Tickets to watch the game will be $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Advance tickets are on sale starting Dec. 19 in Massena Arena, Coach’s Corner in Massena, MVP Sports in Potsdam, both Buster’s sports bars in Ogdensburg and Canton, Heart to Heart Fitness in Akwesasne and Donovan’s Steak and Ale in Malone.
