CANTON — Eleven fire departments battled a blaze for nearly six hours early Wednesday morning after a large apartment house undergoing renovations caught fire, according to the Canton Fire Department.
More than 70 firefighters were on scene fighting the fire at 17 Pine Street which was reported by a neighbor around 12:30 a.m.
The fire had a significant head start prior to being discovered, Robert Crowe of the Canton Fire Department said.
“The fire extended rapidly from the first floor to the attic, causing significant roof damage and eventually leading to the collapse of the roof into the second floor,” he said.
At the height of the fire, three fire hydrants were in use and two units of aerial apparatus were in operation, Crowe said.
Firefighters from Potsdam, Pierrepont, Morley, Hermon, Heuvelton, Madrid, Pyrites, West Potsdam and Rensselaer Falls all responded. DeKalb Junction was on standby at the Canton station.
National Grid was on scene and cut the power to ensure a safe work environment within the structure. The Department of Public Works boosted water pressure and available water supply for firefighters. Canton Rescue, Canton police and St. Lawrence University security were also on scene.
Canton fire was back in service at 6:37 a.m.
It was not known if the building was insured.
There were no injuries reported.
The fire is under investigation by the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team.
