Road work on Canton's Main Street resumes this week, detour back in service

CANTON – The state Department of Transportation’s $10 million downtown Canton Village Main Street Reconstruction Project is resuming this week, and the offsite detour goes back into service, DOT reports.

This is the second year of the two-year project to rebuild the roadway and upgrade storm sewers.

The detour, which runs from Riverside Drive to State Street and ends at State Route 310, is intended to reduce through-traffic congestion on U.S. Route 11 –Main Street -- during the coming construction season.

DOT spokesman Mike Flick says that the work should go a little easier for contractor Luck Brothers of Plattsburgh because of fewer complications in the more-residential area on East Main Street where this year’s work will be focused.

The intersection of State Street and Riverside Drive and the intersection of State Route 310 and State Street will be controlled by temporary traffic signals. Message boards will also be used to recommend use of the detour.

Motorists choosing to use U.S. Route 11 will encounter flaggers in work zones and can expect minor delays.

Some work during this year’s work will require some closures of Main Street.
