With more than twice as many votes as her Democratic challenger, state Sen. Ritchie wins second term

Republican incumbent Patty Ritchie of Heuvelton has won a second term in the state's 48th District with more than twice as many votes as her Democratic challenger.

The former St. Lawrence County Clerk received 60,758 votes to 25,821 for Democrat Amy Tressider of Oswego.

The counts in the three counties in the district were:

                           Ritchie       Tressider

St. Lawrence      12,837            4,108

Jefferson            22,714            8,287

Oswego              25,207          13,426

The tally remains unofficial until they are recanvassed and certified and absentee ballots are counted.

The 48th Senate district comprises the towns of Louisville, Waddington, Madrid, Lisbon, Canton, Oswegatchie, DePeyster, DeKalb, Hermon, Edwards, Morristown, Hammond, Rossie, Macomb, Gouverneur and the city of Ogdensburg in St. Lawrence county, and all of Jefferson and Oswego counties.

Tressider's campaign lacked the support for a big push. She did not advertise much and her campaigning around the district was on a limited schedule.

She grew up in St. Lawrence County, but has lived most of her adult life in Oswego County.

Tresider did best in her home county of Oswego, but still fell far short there, with a little more than half the votes Ritchie amassed.

Ritchie returns to Albany with a big victory, but the Democrats in the Senate appear to have gained control of that house, and her position as the Senate Agriculture Committee chair could be up for grabs.

In the state's 47th Senate District and the 45th District, incumbent Republicans Joseph Griffo of Rome and Elizabeth Little of Queensbury, have no opposition on the ballot.

The 47th district includes the town of Massena, Brasher, Norfolk, Stockholm, Potsdam, Pierrepont, Russell, Pitcairn, Fine and Clifton in St. Lawrence County, all of Lewis County and most of Oneifda County.

The 45th District includes Lawrence, Hopkinton, Parishville, Clare Colton and Pircefield towns in St. lawrence County, and Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Warren abnd Washington counties.
