Richville in running to win $50,000 from Reader’s Digest for community projects

RICHVILLE – Richville is off to a good start in an online voting contest that could net the village $50,000 from Reader’s Digest for community projects.

Lake City, Iowa, now in first place, already has 2,382,000 votes, and Richville, in 191st place, has more than 3,200 votes.

It might seem like an unbeatable margin, but contest organizers note that people can vote as often as they like, and that last year’s winner, Grand Marais, Mich., with a population of about 300, amassed more than a million votes.

People can participate by going to http://ReadersDigest.com/America, plugging in Richville’s Zip Code of 13681, and casting a vote as often as they like through March 1. Voters can upload photos and make comments, such as what Brenda P. and Wendy G. said about building a new playground there since the old one was deemed unsafe and condemned.

“Make sure our little village has a place for our children and grandchildren to play,” said Sandy G.

“We want to know: How would $50,000 make your town an even better place to live?” the web site asks. “Enter your zip to vote for your town, then tell us – plus get your friends, family and neighbors to vote, too.”
