Return to wintry teens; fire potential high in North Country

Posted

Spring is here but the temperature turns wintry tonight with lows reaching into the mid teens, even into the single digits at higher elevations.

With gusty winds and dry conditions, the national Weather Service has posted a Fire Weather Watch for Tuesday in the North Country. The watch is issued as humidity continues to drop and will fall to what the NWS calls 'critical levels' tomorrow morning through tomorrow night. That increases the chance that if a grass, brush or forest fire should ignite, it will be harder to contain than if conditions were wetter.

The dry air and gusty winds combine with the lack of snow on the ground to make combustion of the dry fuel relatively easy. The state ban on outdoor burning continues.

High pressure will keep skies clear for the rest of today, tonight and tomorrow, but by Wednesday morning there is a chance of scattered rain or snow showers.

The chance of precip increases to about 50 percent Wednesday night and persists Thursday morning.

By the weekend, clear skies are expected to dominate, with highs in the 40s and 50s and lows in the 20s.

There are lots of things to check out on our weather page, including forecasts around the region.
