Restoration of Saint Regis Mountain fire tower can begin next summer

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation anticipates that restoration work on the Saint Regis Mountain Fire Tower next summer can begin with assistance from the Friends of St. Regis Mountain Fire Tower.

DEC recently released the final unit management plan (UMP) for the Saint Regis Mountain Fire Tower Historic Area.

The completion of the UMP allows DEC to begin working with volunteer groups to restore the fire tower to a condition that will accommodate full public access of the structure and include interpretive materials related to the tower’s history.

The Saint Regis Mountain Fire Tower Historic Area is a half-acre parcel of land in the Town of Santa Clara, Franklin County. The dominant feature within the Historic Area is the fire tower, which was closed as a fire observation station in 1990 and has not been maintained since.

“The completion of the management plans allows us to move forward with restoring these historically significant resources and opening the fire towers to the public,” DEC Commissioner Joe Martens said.

“Throughout the 20th century, fire towers played a critical role in the protection of New York State’s natural resources. Now they attract many people who want to learn about the role of fire towers, the people that worked in them and the natural resources they protected,” Martens said.
