CANTON – Village Trustee Mary Ann Ashley says she will give her salary as mayor back to the village community if she is elected next month.
Ashley, a Republican village trustee, failed to get her party’s nomination to run for mayor, but has been embraced by Canton Democrats, and will run as a Democrat against Republican incumbent David Curry.
“It is with a great deal of enthusiasm to begin my mayoral campaign for the Village of Canton,” Ashley said.
“If elected, I will continue the practice of giving back the mayor’s salary to Canton, the place I have called home for the past 30 years,” Ashley said in a letter to North Country This Week.
“There have been and, will be, a significant amount of critical issues to be addressed through the committee structure of village government. It has been a pleasure to serve on board committees, with department heads, that have provided the necessary leadership to move us forward,” the candidate said.
She emphasized her service to the community, in terms of funds and work, over the 30 years she has lived in Canton.
Ashley has served as Canton Youth Center Director, St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau Director, and has been a school counselor with St. Lawrence Lewis BOCES for more than 20 years.
